The story begins with the characters Zael, Syrenne, Dagran and Yurrick investigating a Reptid infestation on Lazilus Island. Whilst exploring an underground tomb the group are attacked by re-animated skeletons who rebuild themselves after being struck and Syrenne is struck down. Desperate to save her Zael summons the Outsider, a mystical spirit sealed within the tomb, that is drawn to him by his feelings of loneliness. The Outsider gives him the power to save Syrenne and the group travel further into the tomb. After clearing out the reptid infestation they return to the surface and head back to Lazilus city. On route they encounter a a white tiger, glowing with blue light, which appeared suddenly and started attacking travellers. Zael and the group distract the tiger, allowing Yurrick to rescue two young children, however before the battle has ended the tiger simply turns and flees.
Arriving in Lazilus City the group are joined by Lowell and Mirania, and they settle into their new home (Ariella’s tavern). Whilst exploring the city Zael encounters a young woman fleeing from the guards and he agrees to help her. She identifies herself as Lisa and they spend an evening together, journeying to Stargazer’s Tower, before she decides she has to return home. Meanwhile Dagran has secured the mercenaries jobs for Count Arganan and they carry out meneal work hunting down monsters. General Asthar arrives on the island and both Dagran and Zael join the crowds to watch as he arrive; Zael with hope that one day he two can become a knight, Dagran reacts with anger. Eventually they are asked to stand guard at the castle at Lord Jirall and Lady Calista’s engagement ceremony. At this ceremony Zael is shocked when he realises Lady Calista is Lisa, and cannot help but sneak a small conversation with her when he realises she is unhappy about her marriage to Jirall. Jirall confronts them and spurns Zael, however before he starts a duel the castle is attacked by the Gurak. Jirall flees from the invaders whilst Zael and Calista fight them off. In the main hall Zael encounters the leader of the Gurak invasion, Zangurak, who kidnaps Calista. Dagran joins Zael and the two fight their way to the coast where Zangarak is headed with his hostage. Zael uses the power of the outsider to fight Zangurak, however the Gurak King taunts him and leaves.
Lazilus Castle begins to fire on the Gurak Army with its cannons, and caught between the two armies Dagran, Calista and Zael have no choice but to board a Gurak ship to escape the gunfire. Aboard they quietly dispose of the crew and free the human prisoners (including both Yurrick and Mirania who were captured), claiming the ship of their own. They had intended to follow the Gurak fleet back to the Gurak continent in order to find valuable information for the Lazilus Army however are forced to land on the Vono islands. There Yurrick discovers his father’s crashed ship and Mirania explores the forest, discovering that it’s guardian is dead as the land is slowly dying.
Upon arriving at the lazilus stronghold the mercenaries sneak within just before the Lazilus army arrives. Joined by General Asthar and Sir Therius, Zael and the mercenaries fight their way through the stronghold but cannot reach Zangurak before he flees. General Asthar takes Zael back to Lazilus where Lord Jirall presses charges against him for kidnapping Calista. The mercenaries are locked up, save Dagran who promises to talk to the count. They share a prison cell with Horace who believes they can escape by digging into the tombs beneath the castle. They agree to follow him however the tombs are a dead end and filled with the undead. Returning to their cell Zael is taken away by the guards, interrogated, and then tortured as he refuses to tell them that Calista didn’t want to return to Lazilus. Eventually Calista comes forward and Zael is released. Jirall swears he will get his revenge… somehow.
Freed from jail the group meets Horace, also released, who tells them that his wife has gone missing, last seen around a haunted mansion. The group heads there and encounter the vampire Nebirous, who was feeding off Horace’s wife. Defeating the vampire frees Meredith and the shopkeeper suggests they investigate a network of underground caves beneath the town.
